Description

The Certificate Program in Product Design is designed for the students in mechanical disciplines to help them understand the product designing process and acquire skills required to ideate, design, and develop a practically viable product. It will also help them in learning real-world industry practices and processes involved in manufacturing, thereby making them industry-ready and productive from day one. The courses offered in this certificate program will include explanation of the basic concepts, tools, and techniques to advance concepts and technologies involved in the product development process, all important tools, and their real-world applications in conformity with widely accepted ISO standards, GD&T, and standard practices followed in the manufacturing processes in industry.

This certificate program consists of two modules: Module 1 and Module 2. The detailed course outline of both modules is as follows:

Module 1

Drafting Using Autodesk AutoCAD

The topics covered are mentioned below. You will be assigned various projects for better understanding of the concepts and tools learned.

  • Understanding AutoCAD tools
  • Generating 2D drawings
  • Creating orthographic views
  • Creating isometric view
  • Creating general arrangement (GA) drawings
  • Detailing & drafting

Projects

After completion of the topics of this module, the students will be assigned various projects to work on for better understanding of the concepts and tools learned. Some of the projects will be done under the guidance of the instructor and, and the others, individually by the students themselves.

In addition to AutoCAD software, the students will learn the following designing concepts:

  • Fundamentals of design
  • Traditional designing methods
  • Use of standards in design
  • Aesthetic and ergonomic considerations in design
  • Understanding various measuring instruments
  • Understanding manufacturing drawings
  • Design of machine elements
  • Use of fasteners such as Nuts, Bolts, Washers, etc and their applications and torque requirements
  • Threads and their specifications
  • Left Hand (LH) thread, Right Hand (RH) thread, and their applications
  • Common tools used in manufacturing like taps, drills, reamers, broaches, etc
  • Specifying the hole and slot dimensions based on the tools used to machine them

Module 2

Modeling Using 3D Designing Software

[Note: You can choose any one (preferably two) of the following 3D software packages: SOLIDWORKS, NX, CATIA, Solid Edge, Inventor, Creo Parametric, Fusion 360]

The topics covered are mentioned below. You will be assigned various projects for better understanding of the concepts and tools learned.

  • Creating 3D models
  • Creating assemblies of components
  • Creating surface models
  • Detailing and drafting
  • Creating sheet metal components
  • Rendering of models
  • Motion simulation

Projects

After completion of the topics of this module, the students will be assigned various projects on 3D machine components to reinforce the skills gained and practice the tools learned. Some of the projects will be done under the guidance of the instructor, and the others, individually by the students themselves.

In addition to the software, the students will learn the following engineering concepts:

  • Product lifecycle management, concurrent engineering
  • Safety requirements
  • Materials and their properties
  • Material standards
  • Material testing and instruments used for testing
  • Mechanical properties of engineering materials
  • Selection of material (Example; why most of the couplings are made of brass)
  • Types of manufacturing methods
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA)
  • Fits and tolerances
  • Different types of bearings, gears, couplings, bushings, pins, etc. and their applications
  • Welding processes and welding symbols used in a drawing
  • Calculating bending allowances in sheet metal
  • GD&T symbols and their applications
  • Working with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols in the drawings
  • Tolerance Stack-up
